My Dog Skip is the autobiographical recollection of Willie Morris' first and favorite dog. It tells the story of Morris' early life as a shy young child in the South and his special relationship with his dog, a friendship that helped young Willie face many of life's bigger challenges.
William Weaks Morris was born in 1934 in Jackson, Mississippi. His penchant for writing came from members of his family who were all storytellers, recounting tales and handing them down from one generation to the next.
Morris graduated from high school in 1952 and was named valedictorian of his class. He left the familiar Mississippi Delta for the University of Texas in Austin, where he became editor of the student newspaper, the Daily Texan, in his senior year.
In 1963 Morris got a job as the associate editor of Harper's magazine, and during that time Morris wrote and published his first-book, entitled North Toward Home. Later that same year he was named editor-in-chief of Harper's Magazine.
In 1971 Morris quit his position as editor-in-chief due to editorial disputes with the publication's owner. From that period till 1993 Morris went on to write 6 more books, and in 1995 he published My Dog Skip.
